What is Planing in Sailing?
When a light boat rises onto its own bow wave and skims across the surface rather than pushing through it, sharply increasing speed. Skiffs and boards plane readily downwind in breeze; the transition feels like an acceleration switch.
Example: The fleet started planing as the gusts hit fifteen knots.
