What is Tack (port/starboard) in Sailing?

Which side of the boat the wind is blowing over: starboard tack means wind over the right side, port tack over the left. It determines right of way — a port-tack boat must keep clear of a starboard-tack boat.

Example: Approaching on port, he ducked the starboard-tack boat's stern.
