What is Layline in Sailing?

The imaginary line from which a boat can sail straight to the mark without another tack. Overstanding the layline sails extra distance; arriving below it forces two more tacks in traffic — judging it is a core upwind skill.

Example: She tacked exactly on the layline and led around the windward mark.
