What is Mark in Sailing?

A buoy defining the course, which boats must round or pass on a required side in a set order. Touching a mark carries a one-turn penalty; the zone around each mark has special rules granting an inside overlapped boat room to round.

Example: Three boats arrived at the windward mark overlapped.
