What is Tack (manoeuvre) in Sailing?

Turning the bow of the boat through the wind so the sails fill on the other side, the basic manoeuvre for zig-zagging upwind. Each tack costs a little speed, so sailors tack only when a wind shift or tactical situation pays for it.

Example: She tacked on the shift and crossed the fleet.
