What is Penalty turns in Sailing?

The on-water self-punishment for breaking a rule: two full turns (each with a tack and a gybe) for fouling another boat, one turn for touching a mark. Taken promptly and clear of other boats, the turns exonerate the breach completely.

Example: He spun his two turns immediately and still rounded in the top five.
