What is Off-target in Fencing?

A foil hit landing outside valid target (an arm or leg, say): a white light fires, the bout halts, but no point is scored and the exchange is annulled. Only foil has off-target; épée's target is everything, and invalid sabre hits simply don't register.

Example: His flick landed off-target on the thigh, saving her from 14-12.
