What is En garde in Fencing?

Both the ready stance — knees bent, weapon arm forward, body sideways-on — and the referee's command to adopt it before play. Fencing's bouts are run in French: 'En garde. Prêts? Allez!'

Example: At 'en garde' both fencers coiled behind their lines.
