What is Beat in Fencing?

A sharp tap on the opponent's blade to knock it aside or provoke a reaction, often the first move of an attack. In conventional weapons a clean beat on the opponent's blade can seize priority.

Example: A beat on the blade opened the line for her straight thrust.
