What is Approach in Diving?

The controlled walk or run along the board or platform before the hurdle and takeoff. Rules require it to be smooth and unhesitating; a stuttered approach invites deductions before the diver has left the board.

Example: Three smooth steps, hurdle, and he was airborne.
