What is Play-the-ball in Rugby?

Rugby league's restart after every tackle: the tackled player stands and rolls the ball backwards with the foot to a teammate. It replaces union's contested ruck and gives league its rhythmic six-tackle structure.

Example: A quick play-the-ball caught the defensive line retreating.
