What is Breakdown in Rugby?

The collective term for the tackle area and the ruck contest that follows it. Winning the breakdown — recycling your own ball quickly and slowing or stealing the opponent's — is one of the biggest determinants of a rugby match.

Example: The openside flanker dominated the breakdown all afternoon.
