What is Puddles in Rowing?

The swirls left in the water by each blade after the finish of a stroke. The distance between a crew's puddles shows how far the boat runs per stroke — a quick visual check of boat speed and efficiency.

Example: Their puddles were spaced well past the next crew's, a sign of superior run.
