What is Coxswain in Rowing?

The forward-facing crew member who steers the boat, calls tactics and manages the race plan, but does not row. In the Olympic programme only the eight carries a coxswain. Coxswains must meet a minimum weight and carry ballast if below it.

Example: The coxswain called a push at the 1000m mark to break the field.
