What is VAR in Football?

The Video Assistant Referee — an off-field official who reviews footage and can prompt the referee to overturn clear and obvious errors, but only for goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards, and mistaken identity. The on-field referee makes the final call, often after watching a pitchside monitor.

Example: The goal was ruled out after a three-minute VAR check found a toenail offside in the build-up.
