What is False nine in Football?

A centre-forward who, instead of staying high as a target, repeatedly drops into midfield to receive the ball, dragging centre-backs out of position and creating space for runners from wide or deep. Lionel Messi's role under Pep Guardiola at Barcelona is the most famous example.

Example: With no recognised striker fit, they played their playmaker as a false nine.
