What is Upstream gate in Canoeing?

A red-and-white slalom gate that must be negotiated against the current. The paddler breaks out of the flow into slacker water, turns, climbs upstream through the gate, and re-enters the current — the manoeuvre where most time is won or lost.

Example: She lost half a second exiting the second upstream gate too deep.
