What is Eddy in Canoeing?

A patch of calm or upstream-flowing water behind a rock or obstruction, where the main current is blocked. Slalom paddlers use eddies to park, turn and set up upstream gates; entering and leaving them cleanly is a core whitewater skill.

Example: She snapped into the eddy, spun, and punched back out through the upstream gate.
