What is Cockpit in Canoeing?

The opening in a kayak's deck where the paddler sits, sealed with a spraydeck in whitewater. Sprint kayaks have open cockpits since flat water rarely comes aboard.

Example: He wedged his knees under the cockpit rim for control in the waves.
