What is Pocket in American Football?

The protected area formed by the offensive line around a passing quarterback. A QB who 'steps up in the pocket' slides forward away from edge rushers; when the pocket collapses, he must scramble or throw it away.

Example: He stood tall in a collapsing pocket and delivered the strike.
