What is Safety in American Football?

A 2-point score for the defense, awarded when the offensive ball carrier is downed in his own end zone or the offense commits certain fouls there. The conceding team must then kick the ball away — a double punishment. (The same word also names a defensive back position.)

Example: The sack in the end zone gave them a safety and the ball back.
