What is First down in American Football?
Both the start of a fresh four-down series and the achievement of gaining the required 10 yards, which earns that fresh series. Chains of first downs are how drives stay alive; the on-screen yellow line marks the spot needed.
Example: The 12-yard catch moved the chains for a first down.
