What is Down in American Football?
One play attempt. The offense gets four downs to gain 10 yards; making it resets the count to first down. Announced as down-and-distance, e.g. '3rd & 4' means third attempt with 4 yards still needed.
Example: They faced 4th and inches at midfield and decided to go for it.
