What is Blitz in American Football?

A defensive gamble that sends extra rushers — linebackers or defensive backs — after the quarterback beyond the standard four. It creates pressure but thins the coverage behind it, so a QB who reads the blitz can hit a big play.

Example: They dialed up a corner blitz on 3rd down and got the sack.
