What is Virtual Safety Car (VSC) in Formula 1?

A neutralisation without a physical car: all drivers must lap above a minimum time delta displayed in the cockpit, so the field slows but gaps are roughly preserved. A pit stop under VSC costs much less race time than one at racing speed.

Example: He jumped two cars for free by pitting the instant the VSC was declared.
