What is DNF in Formula 1?

Did Not Finish — a driver who retires from the race through mechanical failure, a crash or disqualification mid-race. A DNF scores zero points, so reliability is worth almost as much as speed over a season. DNS (Did Not Start) is the equivalent for a car that never takes the start.

Example: A hydraulics failure caused his third DNF of the season and cost him the championship lead.
