What is Safety car in Formula 1?

A high-performance road car deployed to neutralise the race after an incident: it picks up the leader, the field bunches behind it at reduced speed and overtaking is banned. Restarts after a safety car erase built-up gaps and often reshape the race.

Example: The late safety car wiped out his 15-second lead and set up a three-lap shootout.
