What is Red flag in Formula 1?

The signal that a session or race has been stopped, usually for a serious crash, debris or dangerous weather. Cars return slowly to the pits; a stopped race may be restarted later, and red-flag periods allow limited work on the cars.

Example: The red flag let him fit fresh tyres without losing track position.
