What is Out-lap / in-lap in Formula 1?

The out-lap is the lap immediately after leaving the pits, on cold tyres; the in-lap is the lap before entering the pits. Undercuts are won and lost on the quality of out-laps and in-laps.

Example: A blistering out-lap sealed the undercut before her rival even reached the pit entry.
