What is Marbles in Formula 1?

Discarded bits of rubber that accumulate off the racing line during a race. Driving on the marbles is like driving on ball bearings, which is why off-line overtaking gets harder as a race wears on.

Example: He ran wide onto the marbles and slid straight off at the next corner.
