What is Zugzwang in Chess?

German for 'compulsion to move'. A situation where any legal move worsens a player's position — they would love to pass, but chess has no passing. Zugzwang decides a huge number of endgames, especially king-and-pawn endings.

Example: White was in zugzwang: every king move dropped the pawn.
