What is Checkmate in Chess?

A check from which there is no legal escape — the king cannot move away, the attack cannot be blocked, and the attacker cannot be captured. Checkmate ends the game immediately in favour of the attacking side; the king is never actually captured.

Example: Back-rank checkmate is the classic finish against an uncastled or boxed-in king.
