What is Promotion in Chess?

When a pawn reaches the last rank it must be exchanged for a queen, rook, bishop or knight of the same colour, effective immediately. Because the queen is strongest, promotion almost always means 'queening'; a game can theoretically have multiple queens per side.

Example: The passed pawn promoted on a1, deciding the endgame.
