What is Stalemate in Chess?

The side to move is not in check but has no legal move whatsoever. Stalemate is a draw, not a win — a critical rule that lets losing sides escape with half a point and makes many endgames drawn.

Example: Down to a lone king, she engineered a stalemate to save the game.
