What is The exchange in Chess?

The specific material difference between a rook and a minor piece (knight or bishop). 'Winning the exchange' means trading your minor piece for an enemy rook; an 'exchange sacrifice' means giving up a rook for a minor piece on purpose.

Example: She gave up the exchange for an unstoppable passed pawn.
