What is Tempo in Chess?

One move considered as a unit of time. Gaining a tempo means making a useful move that also forces the opponent to respond, effectively getting a free move; losing tempi means wasting moves. Development races in the opening are counted in tempi.

Example: The queen sortie lost two tempi to the knight's attacks.
