What is Sacrifice in Chess?

Deliberately giving up material for a non-material gain — an attack on the king, dominating piece activity, or a decisive positional bind. Sound sacrifices are calculated; speculative ones are a gamble.

Example: The rook sacrifice on h7 tore open the king's shelter.
