What is Passed pawn in Chess?

A pawn with no enemy pawn ahead of it on its own file or the adjacent files, meaning nothing can permanently stop it marching towards promotion except enemy pieces. Passed pawns dominate endgame strategy.

Example: The protected passed pawn on d6 tied down Black's rook for the whole endgame.
