What is Novelty in Chess?

The first move of a game that departs from all known previous games and analysis — a new idea, often prepared at home with engines. Notated 'TN' (theoretical novelty). A strong novelty can win a game before the opponent has left preparation.

Example: The pawn sacrifice on move 12 was a prepared novelty.
