What is Initiative in Chess?

The ability to keep creating threats that the opponent must answer, dictating the flow of the game. The side with the initiative attacks; the side without it defends. Initiative can be worth more than material in sharp positions.

Example: Gukesh sacrificed a pawn to keep the initiative.
