What is Candidates Tournament in Chess?

The eight-player tournament that decides who challenges the reigning world champion for the title. Winning it is often called the hardest task in chess. D Gukesh won the 2024 edition in Toronto to earn his shot at Ding Liren.

Example: Winning the Candidates at 17 made Gukesh the youngest-ever challenger.
