What is Icing in Ice Hockey?

The infraction of shooting the puck from your own half across the opponent's goal line untouched. Play returns for a faceoff in the offending team's zone and that team may not substitute — a rule that turns a clearance into a punishment. Short-handed teams are exempt.

Example: The tired defence pair was trapped on the ice after the icing call.
