What is Breakaway in Cycling?
A rider or small group that attacks and rides clear of the peloton, hoping to stay away to the finish. Most breakaways are caught, but they earn TV time, intermediate points and occasionally famous wins.
Example: A six-man breakaway built a lead of four minutes before the sprinters' teams began to chase.
